In the event of the mail server being busy hung up on something(most of the cases, if you are sending\/receiving a large email attachments), you may get a pop-up window saying “Server Timeout”.<\/p>\n

The solution is to extend the amount of time Outlook will wait until it deems the sending\/receiving to have failed. The default is 1 minute, so extending this to 5mins should do the trick<\/p>\n

Here is an instruction how to change the Outlook server timeout setting:<\/p>\n

In Outlook 2007 case:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts…<\/li>\n
  2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.<\/li>\n
  3. Select the e-mail you want to modify and click Change.<\/li>\n
  4. To bring up the Internet E-Mail Settings window, click More Settings…<\/li>\n
  5. Select the Advanced tab.<\/li>\n
  6. Left click on the slide-point and drag to the far right side (10 minutes). By changing the setting, you can avoid the above error message.<\/li>\n
  7. Click Apply and then OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In Outlook 2010 case:<\/p>\n

    1. Click on the orange \u2018File\u2019 tab.<\/li>\n
    2. Under the \u2018info section, click on the \u2018Account Settings\u2019 button and then on the \u2018Account Settings\u2026\u2019 option from the menu. The Account Settings window will open.<\/li>\n
    3. Under the \u2018E-Mail\u2019 tab, find the IMAP account affected, select it and click on the \u2018Change\u2026\u2019 button (or double-click it)<\/li>\n
    4. Click on the \u2018More Settings\u2026\u2019 button.<\/li>\n
    5. Under the \u2018Advanced\u2019 tab you will find the \u2018Server Timeouts\u2019 option.<\/li>\n
    6. Move the slider towards the right (long) to the desired value (5mins?)<\/li>\n
    7. Click OK and close all the windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
